Belize is often mistakenly thought as a Caribbean island. While Belize does have hundreds of offshore islands, the capital and major cities and towns are located on the mainland of Central America.
Belize is a former British colony and was once known as British Honduras although the country does not border modern-day Honduras (the name comes from the Bay of Honduras which lies off of Belize’s southern border). Belize’s national language is English although many people in the country also speak Spanish. Other cultures found in Belize include Mennonites, Creole, Garifuna, Maya, Chinese, East Indian, and expat communities primarily consisting of people originally from the United States and Canada.
More than half of Belize is protected in the form of a national park, nature reserve, or wildlife sanctuary. The mainland is replete with beautiful beaches, pristine rainforests, thick jungles, river gorges, a network of limestone caves, broadleaf forests, and misty mountains. More than 500 bird species are found in Belize, and the country is home to exotic wildlife such as jaguars, monkeys, and giant iguanas. Belize is also home to hundreds of varieties of flowering plants, including orchids, the national flower.
Belize was also the epicenter of the ancient Maya culture. Today, visitors can explore more than a dozen ancient cities, including colossal sites such as Caracol and Xunantunich that once battled with Tikal for dominance of the region. Many of the caves in Belize were also once used for religious purposes by the ancient Maya and still contain priceless artifacts and the remains of human sacrificial victims.
